Dear Moriyama-san:

I think we've met before, but nevertheless, under pain of being accosted by an obnoxious rabbit, I have to write to you as though you were a stranger. Or maybe not. I don't really know how "Operation Go Make People Write Letters To Other People" is supposed to work.

Anyway, I'm just going to assume you know everything about me that you want to know, though if you want to know anything else you can ask. I guess the big thing to ask about is the experiment. The benefit is that we can trade war stories if they're not so mortifying that we just want to forget about them forever. I would certainly understand if they were. A few of mine fall into that category now. I guess it'd do no harm to say that I have an alternate female version that took over for a while. Combined with being a teleportation magnet, all kinds of crap ensued.

Still, I guess it might easily be worse. Which is always a consolation, if other people have it worse; and for them, it's a kind of trophy, so everyone wins or loses to the same degree.

You arrived around the same time I did, right? I haven't been summoned by the Malnosso for a draft or a mission or anything yet, though. Has that happened to you? If you don't want to talk about that, ignore this sentence. Wait, paragraph.

Hell, ignore the whole letter if you want. That's what my last partner did, and, with past experience under my belt, my self-esteem can now handle such a blow for the second or even third time if necessary.

[So... Rin was in the kitchen while Shiemi was telling this story from the living room. He was washing dishes but... well, this story was more interesting. And he stops with what he's doing and walks over to sit next to her on the couch and listen to that]

[It's been way, way too long. It's been only eight days in all. less than a week. On the morning of the 29th he found a Kin'coran refugee shot through the head, then the farm raid and all it's chaos, and then other things which happened before they went back. And when they did, Cloche went mad the next day. He's still not positive how she's doing. And on the, earlier today.

Precis is dead.

He's really not sure how to handle it. Dead, like how his dad was or how that refugee was. Did she even have a corpse? Did it vanish without a proper burial too? And he wasn't there. Sure died on one of those missions, doing a favor for the enemy, wasn't she? Or...

Maybe it's more complicated than that? Maybe he should have been doing this before now. Maybe he could have-

He's a mess. He's distraught, lost, and curled up on the couch with Midori the turtle in his lap. He's cried a lot before now, and the worst of it, really, is all his physical wounds feel much better now. But he can't muster the anger to go and fight in the Dome or something]

Hey, Shiemi! It's Claude. Long time no see, huh? It looks like we're penpals! I haven't written one of these in a while, but I'm glad to be starting up again. Having a penpal is actually kind of fun!

Dear Shiemi-san,

Hello! It looks as though we're to be penpals. My name is Nefertari Vivi, and I'm looking forward to getting to know you. I do apologize for not writing sooner, but I was abducted for a while, and when the Malnosso returned me, it was in a form that made writing too difficult. Thankfully, I'm back to normal now.

You're friends with Rin-kun, aren't you? I know he's mentioned you before--I think he said you come from the same place? What is your world like? Rin-kun explained a bit to me about exorcists; are you studying to become one as well?

I suppose I should tell you a bit about myself, as well. I come from the Kingdom of Alabasta on the Grand Line; my father is king there. Alabasta is a desert kingdom, so while snow is lovely, I must admit I don't do so well in the cold for as long as winters last here. Still, it's nice to be together here with a lot of my friends from back home. Since they're pirates, they've continued to sail along the Grand Line and back in Alabasta, I won't see them again for quite a while. Recently my duck Carue has been brought here as well, and it's wonderful to have him back at my side.

I'll leave it at that for now. I'm looking forward to hearing more about you, and I hope we can be friends!

[It's sort of... well, hard. To surprise someone who you're living with with any sort of birthday surprise. He'd had to be pretty clever about it - making the cake somewhere else (specifically, Seventh Heaven's kitchen) sneaking it back in as carefully as possible, and getting Skarmy and/or Izumo to cooperate in terms of managing where Shiemi is.

Really, he should have gotten a bigger party together. Or well, a party at all. But the mood's been bad lately what with various people going home. So he settles for a party hat, a few balloons, a present he's got wrapped up in his room, and a cake in the kitchen to be revealed sometime around lunchtime. That way he can also ask her what she wants for dinner]

[He can't tell if there's something seriously wrong or if she's just being a big baby. But he knows how this went over last time he tried making her tell him something so...he's not going to do that now. That didn't go over so well.]

[So it's the evening! Rin's home first, today, and he's again struck by how quiet it is in the house. George the fox isn't here, and Midori's never loud, so once he's home he just takes out a manga and starts to read it. He'll wait for Shiemi to get back to decide with her what she wants to make for dinner. His day's been uneventful, though he heard something was up in the square today]

[Shu got Shiemi involved in his own problems. The truth about his own future and Gai hit Shu hard and he wasn't feeling well. The last thing Shu wanted to do was to upset Shiemi with his own actions. He was ready to apologize to her for everything. He had the responsibility of letting her know how everything went. Shu was determined to finish what he started.]

Shiemi, can we talk?

[Once they've returned to the village, Shu went to check up on Shiemi. The mountain was no place for them. Shiemi kept pushing herself to make sure they had enough food and the weather didn't help either. He's so worried about her.]

Masaomi ran into Shiemi at the Dome some day when they were both doing some solo training, sees her at the Vending Machine and saunters over to her with a smile. In only a wifebeater and loose pants. Sure it's cold outside, but he's been working out okay. And sweating ]

[As soon as Shu returns to the village he contacts Shiemi.]

Shiemi? Do you have a moment?

[He'd rather see her in person before he speaks more.]

[ so this just happened. Probably at the house, with the shouting and ending with him incinerating the journal and scaring Midori the turtle, who he is now making to comfort and leave his room to head into the living room. If Shiemi is home she probably heard that or came home heard the tail end of it. Otherwise, he'll have to go find her or they will run into each other of course ]
