[And, perhaps at lunch or dinner or something, sitting at a table across from Shiemi, Rin remembered something he'd been meaning to ask her-]

Oi, Shiemi, isn't "Yellow" one of those trainer guys, like Silver?

E-eh? Yes, she is.

So like, what sort of stuff does she like?

Oh, I don't know! Yellow and I haven't spoken in a while!

Oh man, seriously?! I signed up for that secret Santa and got her name, and I don't know 'er at all.

Ah, maybe you should get her something for her hair?

[It stays up in that hat a lot. Maybe it gets tangled?]

So like what... a brush? Shampoo?

Maybe? Or a hair band? I know they sometimes break when I try to put up my hair.

Wouldn't she already have some of those though?

Maybe you could get her a cute one with a bow?

[Or maybe that's just something Shiemi would like, and she thinks Yellow would like it too. Who knows?]

I'll have to see what I can find. [A beat] I wonder if I should get gifts for more people too...

O-oh no! Do you think I should too!?

I dunno, maybe?! We always did gifts back at the church.

Then I'll make some!

W-w-well I'm going to make as many as I can on short notice...

Man, and I'm just picking up gifts at the item shop, mostly! That's impressive, Shiemi!

Dear Shiemi-san,

Hello! It looks as though we're to be penpals. My name is Nefertari Vivi, and I'm looking forward to getting to know you. I do apologize for not writing sooner, but I was abducted for a while, and when the Malnosso returned me, it was in a form that made writing too difficult. Thankfully, I'm back to normal now.

You're friends with Rin-kun, aren't you? I know he's mentioned you before--I think he said you come from the same place? What is your world like? Rin-kun explained a bit to me about exorcists; are you studying to become one as well?

I suppose I should tell you a bit about myself, as well. I come from the Kingdom of Alabasta on the Grand Line; my father is king there. Alabasta is a desert kingdom, so while snow is lovely, I must admit I don't do so well in the cold for as long as winters last here. Still, it's nice to be together here with a lot of my friends from back home. Since they're pirates, they've continued to sail along the Grand Line and back in Alabasta, I won't see them again for quite a while. Recently my duck Carue has been brought here as well, and it's wonderful to have him back at my side.

I'll leave it at that for now. I'm looking forward to hearing more about you, and I hope we can be friends!

Dear Vivi,

It was so nice to hear about you! If your father is a king does that make you a princess? That's so exciting! Is being a pirate fun, do you think? I'm sorry you don't like the cold.

I am trying learning to become and exorcist! Back home I'm a "tamer." I make friends with nice demons and they help me send mean ones back to Gehenna. I'm not very strong or good at it yet, but one day I think I'll be able to be as strong as my friends and help people!

[It's sort of... well, hard. To surprise someone who you're living with with any sort of birthday surprise. He'd had to be pretty clever about it - making the cake somewhere else (specifically, Seventh Heaven's kitchen) sneaking it back in as carefully as possible, and getting Skarmy and/or Izumo to cooperate in terms of managing where Shiemi is.

Really, he should have gotten a bigger party together. Or well, a party at all. But the mood's been bad lately what with various people going home. So he settles for a party hat, a few balloons, a present he's got wrapped up in his room, and a cake in the kitchen to be revealed sometime around lunchtime. That way he can also ask her what she wants for dinner]

[Shiemi walks into the house blindfold with her hands waving and reaching out. Behind her is Skarmy nudging Shiemi's back with the smooth part of her beak.]

What's going on? I don't get it, Skarmy!

[Go bird, you were totally good for something. And he claps his hands, grinning now as he side-steps so when she gets it off she'll see the cake] Hey Shiemi!

[She's keeping the blind fold on because she doesn't know if she's allowed to take it off yet.]

Rin? Is that you?
